Get Your Paper Work Organised

When you have finally found the perfect rental property, you don’t want to waste any time in applying. Ensure you have all the relevant information you need to apply for the property including:

  • Personal identification i.e. Driver’s Licence or Passport
  • Three referees (including their full contact details)
  • A written reference from a previous landlord is also great
  • Bank statements verifying your income
  • Current employment contract (especially if you are relocating to a new city for work).

Have your application ready to submit on the day

Make sure you have already scanned in all the necessary documents that you will need for your application. This includes driver’s licences and passports, bank statements, employment contracts, rental references and character references. As a relocation agent, I don’t know how many times I see clients rushing around at the last minute trying to get their paperwork organised. If you have just relocated to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Perth, then you may not have access to a computer or printer and this can become a major hassle. Late night visits to Office Works aren’t much fun. Either have all your documents printed out in a folder ready to give to the real-estate agent, or scan the documents and save all the files in a draft email in your Gmail/Hotmail account.

Save time and apply on line

Most real-estate agents provide you with the option to apply for rental property’s on line.

Follow up with the agent

If you’ve submitted an application and you haven’t heard anything 24 hours later, I recommend following up with the agent. Let them know you’re very interested in the property and check if they need any additional information or references. Remember, agents get inundated with emails and calls so you will need to be persistence, without being a stalker.
